Bye Bye, Multiply

On September 15, I received the following message from Multiply.

This is Jack Madrid, Country Manager of Multiply Philippines.

Over the past year and a half, Multiply has shifted its business focus on expanding its e-Commerce presence in Southeast Asia, concentrating exclusively on the Philippine & Indonesian markets. It is for this reason that we have a permanent office here in Manila with over 50 employees, while moving the global headquarters from the United States to Southeast Asia (Jakarta). Our mission today is to become Southeast Asia’s most loved online shopping marketplace.

The export tools are available underneath your headshot in your Multiply site. The export tool enables you to do the following:

  1. Download your content to your computer
  2. Export to Blogger (a blogging platform owned by Google)

Using the export tool:

  1. Visit your Multiply page (example: multiplyid.multiply.com)
  2. Click one of the options available on your Multiply page (below your headshot):
    1. Download Media: to download all media files
    2. Export to Blogger: to transfer your blogs to your Blogger page
      1. Choose file you would like to download
      2. You will receive an email (via the email address registered to your Multiply account) containing a link to download all your Multiply files along with instructions on how to import them to Blogger.

These tools will be available until December 1, 2012 for you to migrate your content. There are efforts underway to offer ways to migrate your content to other platforms such as Tumblr and WordPress, and we will keep you posted as these options materialize.

My first reaction was “Yes! Finally!”, and other things among those lines. I was really ecstatic when  I received that message.

Actually, before this message came, I have succesfully opened and used this current WordPress blog, and when Friendster went down I have also successfully transferred those old entries here, which in turn originally was posted in Multiply. But unlike the Friendster event, I feel no sympathy at all (well, maybe a little bit, but that might be my nostalgic side talking) when they sent this message to me.

Why?

Frankly, I do not know. Or maybe it is because I have found a more reliable place to publish my thoughts to the unsuspecting public.

I opened up my Multiply account because I sort of want to have my own blog, and ultimately, my own website. What attracted me to that platform is its simplicity and customizability, and more importantly I have friends (physical, not virtual) who use that platform for their blogs, pictures, videos, and other stuff they want to share to the world.

But when WordPress came, I became disappointed with it.

I really don’t know why, but it maybe because WordPress is a really damn good blogging platform, enabling you to keep track of everything easily. Honestly, I don’t want to justify it; I am just happy that I can finally move on without Multiply.

I really have no qualms about Multiply per se; their services were good (even though I am only using its “basic” form, just like how I use WordPress), the interface user-friendly. It was just like Friendster plus a blog. In fact, it was my first blog which enabled me to explore my creative side (if I really had one). But then, it might just be the urge to move on that made me agnostic to what just happened.

Maybe I have just have stopped here if not for a great blunder Multiply made: their export tool.

Compared to Friendster, which (as far as my experience would credit me) have really thought about their tool, my impression with Multiply is that they just whipped up a quick html page with links directing to the actual media file that will trigger a browser download, which essentially it really was. They did provide an export tool to Blogger for the blog entries, with the tasty tidbit of providing one to WordPress after some time, but at the time of writing they still don’t have it. And these tools in my case did not work. Apparently, they have emailed me about enabling zip downloads for photo albums, which I later found in my spam folder. Fortunately, I saw that and, yes, it worked! I was able to retrieve photos which I could not when using their media download page (the one with simple links). A former professor of mine was so disappointed about their media export tool that he himself coded a tool of his own.

Anyway, as you can maybe guess from my style of writing this that I am not really interested to write about it. Maybe I was just pressured to write something, since I did a similar thing when Friendster went down, albeit with a little more passion. I’m just glad that I can now move on, finally having everything consolidated in a single site. Anyway, it seems like Multiply has really moved on, and they gladly boast it through the title tag of their home page:

With this in mind, I gladly cancel my five-year-old account. Let this blog entry be my boring epithet to that.

Last time, I discussed this, but only superficially. Today, we’ll delve deeper into the code.

Let us dissect the code as we go along.

The comment block at line 100 says that this is a sample coast creation function. I don’t really know what that means, but delving in through the code, we see the line

Since the language used was BASIC, I think this is how you say that a person’s input from the keyboard be saved to a variable, in this case s. For those familiar with C, this is its equivalent (if the assumption holds):

The codes above assume that the program is being run in a command-line environment. If a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is desired, the Java code segment transforms into:

This brings up a pop-up window. Of course, you can design your own by making the code inherit JFrame, but then this will take longer segments of code.

In C, GUI is hard to implement, so I will pass writing a code segment.

That aside, another erratum: it is evident that the program only accepts input from the domain [1,2), excluding 2. This implies that input can range from 10000… to 1.99999…, or it will repeat asking you for a valid value until you enter

Then the following line appears:

Running this as a C program where s starts with 1 and ends with 1.999999, the output will range from 1.000000 to 1.1000000.

Then follows this code segment:

Then,

170   s=sqr(s*s-1)

Which takes the square root of s (range 1.000000 to 1.100000 based on our C program earlier). With this, the value of s will range from 0 to 0.458258. Then follows the declarations

and the functions

, then the flag indicating the end of the main function

Then follows the declaration of function fractal:

This says that function fractal takes the following as arguments:

Based on the following previous lines

The value of s is not used in this function. (It also appears to be not used at all. But then it is utilized at line 290 and 300, as we see later on.)

Then we again find the following declaration:

As we can see, this is the distance formula. Then we find the following if statement block:

Then sp=1.

As we can see, line 250 is not satisfied, so control goes to the following:

280        r=rnd()+rnd()+rnd()-2

If I am not mistaken, rnd() returns a random number. Searching the rnd() function via Google, the site http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e566zd96(VS.85).aspx states:

The Rnd function returns a value less than 1 but greater than or equal to 0. The value of number determines how Rnd generates a random number:

If number is Rnd generates
Less than zero The same number every time, using number as the seed.
Greater than zero The next random number in the sequence.
Equal to zero The most recently generated number.
Not supplied The next random number in the sequence.

For any given initial seed, the same number sequence is generated because each successive call to the Rnd function uses the previous number as a seed for the next number in the sequence.

Taking the case where rnd() returns 0.999999 (the highest possible number returned at six decimal places), the expression evaluates to:

r = 0.999999+0.999999+0.999999-2
= 0.999997

Then comes the following segment:

290        x2=(x0+x1)/2+s*(y1-y0)*r
300        y2=(y0+y1)/2+s*(x0-x1)*r

ERRATUM: lines 290 and 300 is NOT the midpoint formula, and in line 300, s*(x0-x1), not s(x0+x1). From the previous lines

and taking s as 1.100000 and s at 0.999997 (the highest possible value at 6 places we have established later on),

Then it increments sp by 1, as evident in the following line:

Then

This line calls recursively function fractal, which then executes the function again until the if statement block becomes true, which then calls

After the function returns, it then executes the following line:

which does again what is stated above, albeit different values in its arguments. Then the following ends the function:

The program is then assumed to be terminated, since there are no other instructions that follow.

Hello guys…

This is the very first time I posted something out of the blue (well, maybe not the first time; it doesn’t matter anyway). It is SO boring here (I don’t have the urge to study) so whatever this post’s outcome will be, then so be it. 🙂

For starters:


This picture is from Digimon Adventure 01 (the anime I am currently watching). For those who do not know, this code is the one translated from symbols by Koushiro (Tentomon’s owner). At first glance, it is just a BASIC code (please correct me if I’m wrong) that does mathematical computations (notice the square root functions) and does further processing via the fractal function (which then calls itself recursively).

I’ll just type the code here:

What’s notable with this is that this code segment seem to do nothing but churn numbers (with the distance formula appearing at line 240 and the midpoint fla at lines 290 and 300), then call fractal again recursively two times (at lines 320 and 330). The program gets input at line 130 via a while loop. When input is either less than 1 or greater than 2, the program again prompts the user to enter a number (displaying the message “ratio 1 to 2”). As you can see, the valid inputs are from the interval (1,2) (1 and 2 not included).

Also, there you can see function line at 200, which was not declared in this code segment. My guess is that maybe this is a built-in function, or declared somewhere else (of course, this should be declared somewhere).

Also, this function returns when 250 is satisfied, after executing 260 (calling function line then returning afterwards). Whatever function line does, we do not know; this is the only code segment that was shown at the whole season.

What interests me so much is that this code segment made the following transformation possible:


On the left is Tentomon (holding Koushiro’s laptop) and to the right is Kabuterimon, Tentomon’s Adult form.

Cool, isn’t it? (This happened at ep 5).

How did I do it?
Btw, this is my Linux version of Firefox.

1. Install Stylish add-on.
2. Then, go to http://www.userscripts.org and search for the following scripts:

a. Matrix – Global Style      <- makes all webpages have a black background and green text
b. about:blank – Dark Firefox  <- for displaying the blue Firefox logo at every blank tab
c. BlackMail (real black gmail Theme)
d. Firefox 3 – Chrome Theme  (Dark Gray) Tabs on Top   <- for Google Chrome styled tabs
e. Firefox 3 – Tab Tweaks
f. OneManga – Optimal Viewing
g. Yahoo! Wide BlackForest

Anyway, all of these are optional; so choose whatever you like.

assuming command “line” draws a line between (x0,y0) and (x1,y1) I found that this code draws a sequence of lines between the points (100,50) and (412,50) along with a straight line between these two points .

Exploring The Web: 5 Sites To Visit Part IV

Hello there.

Yes, it’s been a while since I updated this series. For today, we will focus on one site and explore its branches. And the site is going to be www.okcupid.com.

Yes, the name sounds like it’s an online dating site. Yes, the site is, as their banner says, is:

OkCupid: 100% free. The best dating site on Earth.

Whatever.

Well, I am not going to teach you how to find soulmates and sexmates here (sorry, bachelors). Instead, we are going to focus on the tests offered on the site.

Yes, there are literally hundreds and thousands of tests here, made by people focusing on different topics from languages to science and technology. What I am going to do here is give you five sample tests from the site.

Be warned though: this is somewhat biased, as I am posting only links to what interests me, specifically on the topic about languages. Therefore, I am encouraging you to explore the site, finding tests which suit your tastes. As I have said earlier, the site is teeming with tests.

O….kay.

So, the start of classes has been moved to June 16.

But then, who needs this kind of stuff?

What we need are class slots and new sections opened.

Well, ngayon ang aking kaarawan.

Wala lang. Gusto ko lang i-post.

Sa mga bumati (whatever emans they have utilized to get their message through), salamat. Sa mga di naman nakabati, maraming salamat din (kasi hindi siya kumalat at wala namang pumuwersa sa akin na manlibre. Tonikaku, wala rin naman akong ipanlilibre e.).

Oh well, isang taon nanaman ang lumipas, ngunit marami pa namang taong darating. Palagi nga naman nilang sinasabi sa banyagang wika, “Just enjoy life.”

Oh well. Whatever.

Just to end my message, I would like to greet myself in 6 languages (nakit ba nagiging default language ko ang Ingles? YUCK!!!)
